27th January - 15:30 Sarah Shalgosky
Sarah Shalgosky is the curator of Mead Gallery. Mead Gallery is a purpose built contemporary art gallery within Warwick Arts Centre and hosts exhibitions throughout the academic year. Sarah is responsible for leading the Mead Gallery programme and the University of Warwich Art Collection; she is involved in the management of the art centre as well as education and research on and off campus.
3rd February - 15:30 Daniel Sturgis
Daniel Sturgis lives and works in London. He studied at Goldsmiths College and had his first solo show at Camden Arts Centre in 1997. Since then he has shown extensively in Europe and the USA. Notable solo exhibitions include Everybody Loves Somebody The Locker Plant, Chinati Foundation, Marfa (2007); Galerie Hollenbach (2008, 2010, 2013) and And then again, noshowspace, London (2014) His work is in numerous collections including the Saatchi Collection, The Government Art Collection, The Daimler Collection, Progressive Corporation and the University of Warwick.
He has curated a number of exhibitions looking at aspects of contemporary painting and its historic legacy. These include, The Indiscipline of Painting Tate St Ives (2011/12), Daniel Buren’s Voile Toile/Toile Voile at the Wordsworth Trust Grasmere (2005) and Jeremy Moon - a retrospective (2001) a UK touring Exhibition. He is a Reader in Painting at the University of the Arts London.
10th February - 15:30 Paul Edwards and Alec Shepley
Paul Edwards is a senior lecturer in Fine Art at the University of Lincoln. He has undertaken residencies in England, the U.S, Ireland and Germany. In Ireland he made a series of dizzying paintings looking down into spaces and out to the horizon on the cliffs of County Mayo. His work is generally concerned with reconciling the presence, mass and weight of the subject with the passing of time. Edwards is interested in the notion of drawing as time based, containing time, piled up in archaeological layers like rock strata, unlike film and other more linear time based media.
Alec Shepley is an artist engaged in contemporary art practice whose work has been shown nationally and internationally. He is also currently the Senior Academic, Fine Arts within the School of Fine and Performing Arts at the University of Lincoln and has been an active participant in national and international artistic research seminars and conferences for several years. Prior to his appointment at Lincoln in 2008 he was Reader in Fine Art at Glyndwr University in north Wales.
Shepley’s Artistic Research is an exploration of the poetics of confusion and anxiety, failure, melancholia, ambivalence and hope. Through an intertwining of reality and fiction he produces improvised sites that are dialectically linked ‘replies to one another’.
Schematic works made by grouping together a range of highly selective media and materials including painting, photography, text and video, found and made objects, sound and neon lighting, construction materials, and fabric, invite the viewer to reflect on the loss of meaningful representation. That the fragment has the potential to restore our embodied relationship to the world is essential to an understanding of his art practice. He is concerned not to just make art about art but to empower the viewer to apply an aesthetic of regular experience to other encounters in a wider field of action.
His PhD from Manchester Metropolitan University (2000) entitled ‘Installation Art Practice and the Fluctuating Frame’ focused on creative practice as research and ways in which artists identify new modes of expression and new media, materials, processes and audiences, through reflective practice and complex creative processes such as problem finding and delayed closure.

Alan Kane is an artist and curator born in Nottingham in 1961 and now based in London. He has exhibited solo exhibitions at The Whitehall Gallery, London, Turner Contemporary, Margate, and The Showroom, London. Kane often works in sculpture combined with found or readymade components; he questions the percieved hierarchies associated with art forms. Alan Kane is also the artist exhibiting the Homeworks 1 and Homeworks 2 sculptures outside The Usher Gallery - garden sculptures of Artemis and Apollo on brightly coloured plinthes which were gifted to the museum by The Contemporary Art Society.

Andrew Bracey, born 1978, is an artist and curator, based in Lincolnshire, England. He is currently Programme Leader of MA Fine Art and MA Contemporary Curatorial Practice at The University of Lincoln, England.
Solo exhibitions include Nottingham Castle (2014), Manchester Art Gallery (2009), Transition Gallery, London (2007), Wolverhampton Art Gallery (2007) and firstsite, Colchester (2006).
His curated exhibition (detail) will open in The Usher Gallery on 20th December 2014.
10th March - 15:30 Emily Speed
The idea of Architecture/Inhabitant is at the core of Emily Speed's work; how a person is shaped by the buildings they have occupied and how a person occupies their own psychological space.
Emily Speed is based at The Royal Standard in Liverpool. She is the 2014/15 Derek Hill Foundation Scholar at the British School at Rome and recent exhibitions include Cities of Ash at g39 and Strange Business at Syson Gallery, Nottingham. 17th March - 18:00 George Shaw
George Shaw was born in Coventry and is known for his suburban subject matter; Shaw attracted attention for painting the estate where he'd grown up in the 70s. He often paints using Humbrol enamel paints which are more often associated with airfix modelling and lends a unique appearance to his work. He was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2011 for his work The Sly and Unseen Day.

14th April - 15:30 Judith King
Judith King is a contemporary art curator, initiating and devising projects and exhibitions usually for heritage organisations. Judith began working for English Heritage in 1995, as part of a curatorial panel for Living at Belsay, refurnishing an historic house with contemporary design. Her role included finding artists, managing thirteen new contemporary design commissions and co-ordinating the loan of over sixty smaller works from artists and designers.
From being part of a curatorial panel to curating major projects for Belsay as an individual, Judith has brought together artists, designers, performers, architects and fashion designers in six major commissioning exhibitions for Belsay Hall Castle and Gardens.

Neal Rock is a visual artist currently living and working in London, UK and Los Angeles, California. Born and raised in the industrial steel town of Port Talbot in South Wales (UK), he relocated to England at the age of 21 to attend the University of Gloucestershire, gaining a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting. The following year Rock attended the MA Fine Art program at Central Saint Martin’s School of Art & Design in London, graduating in 2000.
During the early and mid 2000s Rock's work gained attention nationally and internationally with participation in notable art fairs such as Art Basel Miami and the Armory Show NYC, alongside numerous museum and public gallery group exhibitions. Such shows include; Expander, at The Royal Academy of Arts, London. Extreme Abstraction, The Albright Knox, Buffalo NY. Landscape Confection, The Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus Ohio & Contemporary Art Museum, Houston. Jerwood Contemporary Painters 2007, Jerwood Space, London. Can Buidlings Curate, Storefront for Art & Architecture, NYC.
Rock has had commercial solo exhibitions in New York, London, Los Angeles and Amsterdam and in 2009 had his first solo exhibition with a UK public gallery at The New Art Gallery Walsall. He is currently undertaking practice-based doctoral research within the Painting Department of the Royal College of Art in London. His work has been profiled in national newspapers such as the Guardian, Independent, The Los Angeles Times and New York Times alongside art & culture magazines such as Art Review, Art Monthly and Tank. His work is held in private and corporate collections across Europe and the US.
