British Archaeology
The British archaeological collections consist of artefacts collected within the historic County of Lincolnshire through systematic archaeological fieldwork and through casual finds made by members of the public. The archaeological collections began at the very founding of the museum, when a number of private collections were donated. It continues to be the largest collection in the museum with well over a million objects.
The collections cover a huge span of time, with the earliest material dating to around 300,000 years ago, before the emergence of fully modern humans, and continuing until the 18th century.
Highlights of the collection include objects from Lincolnshire’s prehistoric past, including the internationally important assemblage of Iron Age votive objects from Fiskerton; material excavated from the military and colonial periods of Roman Lincoln; evidence from the huge Anglo Saxon cemeteries from Lincolnshire; finds from Viking Lincoln and evidence of life in Medieval and Tudor Lincolnshire.
