Archaeology Day 3 - Back to the trowel!
Archaeology events for all ages - with talks for adults and activities for children. Run jointly with Lincolnshire Heritage.
This is the third year we have run our Archaeology Day. This day is run jointly with Lincolnshire Heritage and as part of the Council of British Archaeology's Festival of Archaeology. It is a free event day for all ages with serious talks for adults and fun activities for children. All the activities are subject to change, but we hope to have for the children a chance to handle artefacts, do a mini dig and reconstruct a face! From 10am to 4.30 with an optional craft £1 a go.
11.30am A talk about experimental archaeology in the prehistoric section with our education staff. A chance to see how prehistoric man lit fires and ground corn.
1pm A Roman archaeology talk in the Gallery with Antony Lee, our Roman archaeology expert.
2pm An Anglo-Saxon archaeology talk with Dr Grigg (our Anglo-Saxon expert) talking about grave goods and what they can tell us about Anglo-Saxon dress, warfare and beliefs.
3pm A Viking talk in the gallery with our education staff. Find out how well-groomed our Scandinavian forbears wore with our education staff.
4pm A talk about evidence of trade in the medieval and early modern period with our education staff.
We will have stalls and talks by the following groups:
Heritage Lincolnshire (in association with Lincolnshire Wolds Festival and the Layers of History Project), AEMES (Ancient Egyptian and Middle East Society), SLHA (Society for Lincolnshire Heritage and Archaeology), LAGER (Lincoln Archaeology Group for Excavation Education and Research) and OSHG (Old Sleaford Heritage Group).

To support this year’s 25th anniversary of the Festival of Archaeology we are asking our audiences for their feedback. The survey is conducted according to the Market Research Society guidelines and will provide us with valuable insight into how we can get more people involved in archaeology and heritage activities. Please complete the online audience survey here and you could win an Amazon voucher worth £50!
