About The Papestry

For the past six months, thousands have watched in awe as architectural illustrator Matt D.Wright draws the city’s famous Bailgate and Steep Hill area, brick by brick. Armed with just a trusty set of pens and a 25 foot roll of paper, Matt has been creating his own tribute to the Bayeux Tapestry: a continuous pen drawing of one of Lincoln’s most picturesque and historically significant areas.
Called the ‘Papestry’, Matt’s labour of love recreates every brick, tile and shop front in intricate detail, stretching from Lincoln County Assembly rooms on the Bailgate to The Rest Hotel on Steep Hill.  The work is a precious time capsule of social history, celebrating Lincoln, its people, and centuries of stunning architecture and history.
