Lincoln Book Festival: An evening with Richard III
Chaired by Philippa Hoskin, reader in Medieval History at the University of Lincoln
6.15 pm
For more then five centuries the whereabouts of the body of the last king of the Plantagenet dynasty was lost in the mists of time. Richard III had been killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field in 1485 and since then many rumours and theories had circulated about his final resting place. Then in the summer of last year the Richard III Society initiated a excavation at a site believed to be the location of the long disappeared Greyfriars monastery. Archaeologists from the University of Leicester, working on the site, uncovered a human skeleton on the first day of work. It soon became apparent that the body was that of a man in his thirties who had suffered multiple wounds from a variety of weapons and had been hurriedly buried. DNA testing later proved the long-lost remains of Richard III had finally been found. Day Four of the Book Festival will tell the story of the troubled times in which Richard lived and died, how his bones were exhumed and hear from the author whose book first inspired the dig.
Sarah Gristwood author of Blood Sisters: The women behind the Wars of the Roses – best-selling Tudor biographer and commentator on royal affairs talks about the lives and importance of the women in this very real game of thrones.
