Easterlies is an exciting new exhibition that features the work of seven artists from the Lincolnshire areas who exhibit a multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary art in response to viewing museum artifacts.
An interview with East Coast 7 artists
Who are the East Coast 7 artists?
We are a group of contemporary artists who met whilst completing fine art degrees at Lincolnshire universities. We formed a study group for mutual support and to further our artistic practices.
Tell us more about this exciting new exhibition:
This exhibition shows work inspired by artefacts that are normally hidden within the North East Lincolnshire Museum Collection. The members of the East Coast 7 (EC7) group work in a variety of media – Julie Gough, sculpture and narrative; Sue Hoare, print; Pippa Llewellyn, painting; Heather Pickwell, sculpture; Tina Waller, photography; Jackie Welton, mixed media and Sally Yarrington, painting. Consequently, the exhibition is very diverse.
Why did you take on this project?
We were offered the exciting experience of working with a local museum’s artefacts and en-gaging with our local heritage. This project also gave EC7 the opportunity to work with other professional artists and to present our work to a wider audience.
What have been the challenges?
The Collection is very diverse and offered almost limitless opportunities for interpretation, therefore selecting an artefact and focusing on an individual theme, was the most demanding challenge.
How have you worked together on the collection?
Visiting the Heritage Centre collection was a fascinating experience. The group was given an initial introduction by the curator and then we all developed the brief in different directions. We followed our own particular discipline and singled out particular artefacts that resonated with us artistically. It has been fascinating to see how our responses have all been so differ-ent.
Where do you go from here?
We intend to continue to develop our work for The Easterlies project over the next 18 months. We will further our current themes, or perhaps begin from new starting points based on the museum collection, as we work towards several more exhibitions.
