‘Cloud 1’ and ‘Cloud 2’

By artist Luke Abbott being played on The Collection's unique multi-channelled permanent sound wall.

The pieces are titled 'Cloud 1' and 'Cloud 2', each consisting of 22 stems lasting 10 minutes.

'Cloud 1' is a study in generative composition processes, each of the channels is the result of the same algorithmic composition being generated 22 separate times. The piece moves through different movements, in some sections the channels are near identical and in others they have stark variations.

'Cloud 2' acts as a counterbalance to Cloud 1, where Cloud 1 is about activity, Cloud 2 is about stillness. It takes the form of a drone, with each channel as a separate layer of the drone.

There is a vast difference between the formations, but they have the same ingredients, little water droplets suspended in air. In the same way these sound pieces are at their core the same idea, making the 22 channels work as one using a rule based composition process, all made of little oscillations suspended in air.
