The Lincoln Plesiosaur

In the Jurassic period, approximately 180 million years ago, the area we now know as Lincolnshire was covered by a tropical sea. The creatures that once swam in that sea are now often found as fossils, particularly in limestone.

In a 19th Century brick pit, on the site of what is now St Faith’s School, the fossil of this plesiosaur was found. It lay unstudied for many years but we now know that it was killed by a larger creature, probably another plesiosaur, whose bite broke its spine and it fell to the sea floor to become covered by sand which stopped it being disturbed.
