Civil War armour and sword

Lincolnshire did not see any of the major battles of the Civil War, but the County was still affected. The largest military engagement in the County was the Battle of Winceby in 1643, when Cromwell’s Roundheads decisively defeated the Royalists. The armour was found close to the battlefield, and it appears as if it was torn off in a hurry. Perhaps it was cast aside by a fleeing Royalist soldier?

The broadsword was found in the River Trent at Gainsborough. It is known as the ‘Cavendish Sword’, after the Royalist commander who was killed in the town, but there is no evidence for such a grand connection.
