From the strategic depths of boardgames to the immersive narratives of Role-Playing Games, we invite enthusiasts of all ages to explore, play and discover in Games: Enter the Unknown.

Thursday to Monday from 10am to 4pm

  • Roll the dice to choose your route through the exhibition or decide your own adventure. 
  • Explore the links between extraordinary ancient games in the museum’s collection, well-known boardgames and contemporary Tabletop Role-Playing Games. 
  • Discover core elements of gaming culture through creative and interactive activities throughout the exhibition. 
  • Let your imagination run wild through creating your own characters and building your own worlds. 
  • Dive into an extensive collection of games available for free play, selected and curated by our communities and volunteers. 
  • Encounter new work by artists who breathe life into this fascinating universe of creativity and fantasy.

This exhibition is suitable for all, from seasoned gamers to curious newcomers.

Games: Enter the Unknown Opening Night
Friday 19 July, 6pm - 8pm, free entry.
Join us for our first late night opening to celebrate the start of the Games exhibition. Grab a drink from the café, sign up for a live campaign play session of DnD and enjoy an exclusive first view of the exhibition. Let the games begin!

DnD Live Campaign Play
Friday 19 July, 4pm-6pm or 6pm -8pm, free.
A once proud kingdom lies in ruins, with only the young Prince striving to rebuild. Will you join the noble adventurers pledged to reclaim the castle and solve the mystery of its destruction?
Play as part of a small group of heroes, with unique skills and abilities of your own creation! Battle with monsters and villains to complete your quest and save the kingdom.

Sunday Screenings
Every Sunday from 1pm, free entry, no need to book.
Join us every Sunday for a family friendly screening of a classic film inspired by games or gaming culture. Each week we will be posting a teaser to tempt you or collect your copy of the screening schedule from reception. Ratings and running times vary, see reception for full details. 

Game Night at the Museum: Fun & Fantasy
Friday 26 July from 6pm – 8pm, free.
Celebrate the realms of fun and fantasy with the Creative Collective* at this after-hours event at the Museum. Try out the brand new game, MUSEO, developed by the Creative Collective or play a favourite with friends in our pop up board game café. Enjoy a free themed drink, make a badge, build a whole new world or character with our popular building bricks and get your face painted before playing bingo. Cosplay encouraged!

*The Creative Collective are a group of young creatives that meet weekly at the Museum. Together they develop and create exciting projects and get involved with the Museum and Usher Gallery.

 

Collaborative Zine Making with Moonbuns (Ages 13-18)

Saturday 10 August from 1pm - 3pm.

Work with Nottingham based Queer Artist Collective Moonbuns to create your own collaborative zine! Moonbuns have a mixed aesthetic which blend to make beautiful artworks, an example of which you can see throughout the duration of the exhibition in the New Curtois Gallery.

Family Cardboard Cosplay
Saturday 10 August from 12.30pm – 3pm. Free, drop in.
Join us in this family friendly workshop in designing and making your own cardboard cosplay. Using cardboard, scissors and glue, create a cosplay costume to transform yourself into a character of your own making!

Landscapes and Lorecraft (Ages 11-18)
Tuesday 13 August from 10.30am to 3.30pm, £15. Booking essential.
In this all day creative writing workshop, we will use our chosen set of values to devise a creation myth to inform the politics and religion of a brave new world. There will be gods, monsters and world building inspired by global tales as we go back to The Beginning.

Warhammer Figure Painting
Monday 19 August from 10am to 4pm. Free, drop in. 
Have you ever wanted to try your hand at painting Warhammer figures? Join Adam from Warhammer Lincoln to pick and paint your own Warhammer figure. This is a free all day drop in event and will take approximately 15 minutes.

Building Block Worldbuilding 
Thursday 22 August – Monday 26 August from 10am – 4pm. Free, drop in.
During August Bank holiday weekend Lincoln Museum’s Orientation Hall will be a buzz of Block Building activity! Pop down for this free event to build your own world vision with building blocks courtesy of Brick by Brick Play.

Join us for a late night opening of Games: Enter the Unknown. Enjoy the exhibition after closing time and enjoy a workshop!

Wet Felting Hats Workshop
Friday 30 August from 4.30pm – 8.30pm. £50. Booking essential. 
Using resist wet felting techniques, you will learn how to create a wool felt hat. From design to completion, you will use carded wool, soap, water and your own hands to create your hat.

Roll for Inspiration with Laura Mabbutt
Saturday 21 September 10am – 12.30pm. £3 per person. Book in advance.
A fun, creative workshop, guiding you through a playful way to kickstart your creativity.
Roll dice to decide tools, colours, and materials to use as we gamify the creative process. This workshop will inspire ideas for those new to creating and offer a new technique for those with more experience.

Mini Model Making Workshop
Friday 11 October from 4.30pm – 9pm. £20 per person.  Book in advance
Help bring your world to life and create a diorama in this model making workshop. You will use pulpboard, polymer clay, paint and modelling materials to create a miniature building scene, ideal for visualising your world!
